Twenty-two inmates were killed and six police were injured as the hostage situation in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig came to a bloody end.

Leaders of the Abu Sayyaf group held prisoners in the camp attempted to escape early Monday morning. The jailbreak resulted in the death of three jail guards and one prisoner.

Abu Sayyaf leaders Kumander Robot, Kosovo, Global at Ka Lando were among those confirmed dead. Kumader Robot and Kosovo are on trial for the kidnapping in Sipadan, Malaysia in 2000 and the abduction of tourists in Palawan in 2001, respectively.

During the day-long negotiations, Abu leaders asked for food, signed documents for no bodily harm and a chance to talk to the media.

The Special Action Force (SAF) launched the assault at about 9 a.m. after Government negotiator Parouk Hussin announced the failure of the negotiations. The assault lasted for almost an hour and half.

Clearing operations revealed additional arms found inside the jail cells confirming earlier intelligence reports that a jailbreak was in the works.
